Exploratory Music-6th Grade

This course introduces students to the elements of music through singing, playing instruments, and moving. Students study basic theory concepts in order to read and perform a variety of musical styles from classical to contemporary spanning a number of cultures.

Topics:

The Singing Voice-Singing mechanism, Vocal Combinations

Musical Instruments-Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Strings, and Keyboard

Writing Music-Notes and Rests, Clefs and ledger lines, Time Signatures and Counting Rhythm, Melodic Intervals, and Harmony

Music Through the Ages-Pre-History and Ancient European, African, and Asian Music through 20th Century American Music

Exploratory Music-7th & 8th Grade (elective class)

This course traces America's Music from Pilgrims to computers. Students use online research, powerpoints and class discussions of music such as spirituals, folksongs, sea chanteys, blues, work songs, jazz, rock and roll, soul, disco, rock, rap, hip hop and computer generated music.
